I'd say this is the best solo trip I've taken in my life so far. It also happened to land the week after my birthday, which made it feel even more special.

I felt every emotion, met the coolest people, drank way too many beers, ate as much tapas as I could, and I think I even fell in love a few times. Crazy to think about it now lol.

And it wasn't expensive at all... I credit that to actually being prepared this time. I learn from my mistakes 😅.

I booked a round trip flight from Phoenix, AZ to Madrid for two weeks, with only about two months of notice. I decided fast because the price was too good to pass up.

The following month I put together an "itinerary," which really just meant picking the cities I wanted to visit and how many days I'd spend in each. I figured I'd visit the south of Spain first since it's cheaper, and save Madrid for the end.

Two weeks before the flight I paid in advance for the trains and buses, and finished paying for the hostels. Everything was set. The only thing left was to budget the actual spending money for food, random stuff, etc.

The itinerary:

Madrid was exactly what I expected: a busy city with a night life that doesn't quit. Not much I can say other than it reminded me of Mexico City in some ways. Just a refined version obviously.

The day after, I got up early and took the bus to Granada. I felt like I was in a dream a few times since I got there. The people, the city, the history... and the ✨free tapas✨, worth it every single time. Staying four nights there was the right call.

One of my favorite moments there was a small flamenco show for maybe ten people. It wasn't planned, nobody told me where it was, I was just walking, saw a flyer outside a place that said there was a flamenco event, and went in. No tourists, low lighting, no one filming or even taking pictures. Three incredibly talented artists were on stage, one of them singing his heart out. I was hypnotized right away. I actually forgot I had to pay at the counter... but paid on my way out lol.

This is also when I started meeting very cool and fun people, also some weird people too. Long story, but I 'fell in love' once here with someone that just shook my hand as a goodbye when I told her that it was my last night in Granada. Anyways, Sevilla was next.

Sevilla was more beautiful than I expected. What I loved most was exploring it by bike. Perfect way to see the city, really bike friendly. I also made two good friends there. Shoutout to my oranges, Nina and Rodri 🍊🍊

Cádiz was the peak of the trip. Everything just made sense once I got there... the beach, the people, the experiences I won't forget. Special shoutout to Frank, a super friendly guy from the Netherlands who was biking across all of Spain on his way to Morocco. Saying goodbye to him, and everyone else I'd met that last night, was hard. I cried a little on the way back to Madrid XD.

That's around when I started writing down what happened each day in my notes app, so I wouldn't forget how I felt.

I got back to Madrid and met up with my 🍊 friends from the Sevilla hostel. We went out, had fun, and even got matching orange tattoos the next day.

This is when the trip started feeling really nostalgic, because I realized it was about to end.

I also understood how hard it is to say goodbye when you don't know if you're going to see someone in person again.

The day before I flew back, I took a day trip to Toledo, a beautiful little town close to Madrid. Even so, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the other days. I think I was already somewhere else in my head.

The last day I just relaxed and got ready for the flight home.

Looking back, the people I met on this trip are what made it so memorable.

Y un shoutout al Miguel Beltrán y al Ed por recibirme en Phoenix. Me la pasé atm.

And yes... I'm going back to Spain whenever I can ~afford~ it. Without a doubt.
